The hygienic quality of milk is much more important now than in the past, since the passing of a number of European regulations has imposed the respect for various hygiene and sanitary parameters which determine the saleability and price. In this light, as well as being an obligation, the production of quality milk has become a source of increased income for all breeders, with the differentiation of price depending on the relative chemical and qualitative characteristics of the milk. The hygiene of the dairy cows’ udders, the cleanliness of milking areas and also the health of the livestock therefore all become fundamental factors, the latter maintained by the prevention of foot conditions, healthy feeding and the preventative treatment of mastitis.
